## What pat testing involves, and who needs it
Portable appliance testing is the formal inspection and electrical testing of any equipment that plugs into a socket: laptops, monitors, chargers, kettles, heaters, fridges, power tools, IT racks, extension leads and everything else that quietly accumulates in a working building. Each item is visually inspected, electrically tested where appropriate, labelled with its result and recorded against a unique asset ID.

The output is not the sticker. The output is the register: a complete, dated record showing what was tested, what passed, what failed and what was done about it. That register is the evidence you produce when someone asks whether your electrical equipment is safe, and it is the reason PAT testing is treated as routine housekeeping by well-run facilities teams and as an emergency by everyone else.

### Why professional delivery matters

- A competent tester distinguishes between a Class I item needing an earth continuity and insulation resistance test and a Class II item that does not; getting this wrong produces a register full of meaningless results.

## What is PAT testing?
PAT testing (portable appliance testing) is the inspection and electrical testing of every item in your building that plugs into a socket. Each appliance is visually checked, electrically tested where its construction class requires it, labelled with the result and recorded against a unique asset ID in your register.

It exists to answer one question with evidence rather than opinion: is the electrical equipment in this building safe to use today? A labelled appliance and a dated register prove that someone competent checked, what they found and when the item is due again.

## The electrical safety mistakes we find most often
Almost every failure we log comes from the same short list. None of them are exotic; they are the everyday habits that build up in a working building between one test and the next.

Booking testing on a sensible cycle removes all four in a single visit, and minor issues such as a wrong fuse or a loose cord grip can be corrected on the spot where practical and agreed with you on site.

## Is PAT testing required by law?
Technically, no: there is no law that names PAT testing as a mandatory procedure. What UK regulations do require is that you ensure electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. The obligation is the outcome, not the method.

PAT testing is simply the most practical way to prove you have met that obligation. During an audit, an insurance claim, a tender or a pre-qualification questionnaire, a dated register of tested assets is documentary evidence; an assurance that the equipment looked fine is not.

That is why managing agents, insurers and principal contractors keep asking for it, and why testing intervals are set by risk: frequently for 110v site tools and hire equipment, less often for static office equipment.

## PAT testing detail: classes, intervals and environments
PAT testing is not one procedure applied identically to everything with a plug. What gets tested, how, and how often depends on construction class, environment and duty cycle.

### Class I and Class II appliances
Class I appliances rely on an earth connection for protection: kettles, microwaves, fridges, most desktop PCs, floor cleaners and many power tools. These receive earth continuity and insulation resistance testing. Class II (double insulated) appliances such as laptop power supplies, many chargers and plastic-bodied tools have no protective earth, so earth continuity does not apply and insulation testing or an equivalent leakage measurement is used instead. Recording the class correctly is what makes the register meaningful years later.

### IT equipment and server rooms
Comms rooms carry high densities of leads, PDUs and rack-mounted equipment where an unplanned shutdown is unacceptable. Testing here is planned around your IT team, with alternatives such as visual inspection and leakage testing on live-critical equipment, and full testing scheduled during agreed maintenance windows.

### Extension leads, RCD adaptors and multiway blocks
These are the single most common failure category in offices. Long leads coiled under load, daisy chains, four-way blocks feeding four-way blocks, and adaptors with internal damage all appear routinely. Each lead is treated as an asset in its own right rather than being lumped in with the equipment it feeds.

### Construction tools and 110v site equipment
Site tools take physical abuse and are typically tested every three to six months. Transformers, festoon lighting, breakers, grinders and extension reels are checked for casing damage, cable pull-out and connector condition as well as electrical performance. Contractors usually need the certification in place before tools go through the gate.

### Rental properties, HMOs and student lets
Appliances supplied with a tenancy, cookers, washing machines, fridges, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, are commonly tested annually and at change of tenancy. For HMOs and portfolios, testing is co-ordinated across properties so the whole compliance file renews on one cycle.

### Retail, hospitality and commercial kitchens
Heat, grease, water and constant plugging and unplugging make catering environments high-attrition. Toasters, fryers, coffee machines, hand dryers and display equipment are inspected with particular attention to flex condition at the entry point and to contamination inside plugs.

### Setting your retest interval
As a general guide, office equipment is typically tested every 12 to 24 months, construction tools every 3 to 6 months, and rental property appliances annually. Higher-risk or heavily handled equipment justifies shorter intervals. We confirm a sensible interval for your premises when we quote rather than applying a blanket twelve months to everything.

### Residential versus commercial
Commercially, testing is about maintaining equipment provided for employees and visitors and evidencing it.
