It only earns its place if it works on the day it is needed, which is why it is tested on a routine cycle rather than inspected once at installation. Testing has two parts. A function test confirms each luminaire illuminates when its supply is interrupted. A duration test confirms the battery sustains that illumination for its rated period, commonly three hours, and that the luminaire recharges properly afterwards. Batteries degrade invisibly, so a fitting that passes a function test can still fail after twenty minutes of load. Non-maintained fittings only illuminate on failure of the normal supply, typical of offices and back-of-house areas. These still require verification and formal recording: the panel tells you what it believes, and a physical inspection confirms whether the luminaire in the stairwell is actually illuminating and free of obstruction. ### Escape route and open area coverage Illumination is required along escape routes, at every change of direction, at stairs and level changes, at final exits, at fire alarm call points and firefighting equipment, and in open areas where occupants need to reach a route.
