# What is PAT testing? Appliance checks and their place in electrical maintenance
By Test Master UK6 November 20263 min read

Service illustration: pat testingPAT stands for portable appliance testing. The term is commonly used for inspection and appropriate electrical testing of equipment as part of an electrical maintenance system. It helps identify findings requiring action; it is not a guarantee that an appliance can never develop a fault. This introductory guide explains the purpose and boundaries of appliance checks, with separate guides covering frequency, legal duties and records in more detail.

## Which equipment can be included?
An agreed inventory may include kettles, computers, monitors, extension leads, cleaning equipment and suitable power tools. Everyday descriptions such as 'anything with a plug' do not establish a complete scope. Detachable leads, specialist devices and equipment connected permanently need their treatment clarified.

Identify ownership and responsibility before attendance. Landlord-supplied, hired, staff-owned and contractor equipment may have different management arrangements. An inspection of an employer's inventory does not automatically assess everything another person brings into the building.

## Visual inspection and electrical testing are different
Visual checks can identify damage to cables, plugs or casings and signs of overheating. Some defects can be found without an electrical instrument. HSE describes a proportionate maintenance system that can include user checks, formal visual inspection and testing where appropriate.

Electrical tests can help assess matters such as relevant protective conductors and insulation. The competent person selects suitable methods for the equipment; not every item needs an identical automatic sequence. A device operating normally does not by itself establish that its protective measures are adequate.

## What happens to the results?
Results should be understandable enough to identify the equipment and any necessary action. An asset reference, location, date and finding can connect the visit to maintenance records. Labels are useful identification aids, not an ongoing safety approval.

Unsafe equipment should be prevented from returning to use following competent advice. Record whether it was repaired, replaced or removed, along with any appropriate checks before reuse. A failed result is not resolved merely because somebody received a report.

## Does PAT testing replace other safety checks?
No. EICR testing concerns the fixed electrical installation, while PAT checks concern the agreed equipment scope. Neither replaces the other. Fire safety systems and building precautions also have their own assessment and maintenance requirements.

A satisfactory appliance result does not establish the condition of the socket circuit, and a recent installation report does not make a damaged kettle safe. Keep the evidence and outstanding actions separate enough for the right person to respond.

## How should a business arrange it?
Describe the equipment, how it is used, existing records and access constraints. Agree the scope, interruptions and reporting before the visit. Frequency should reflect risk and applicable requirements, not an unsupported rule that all appliances need annual testing.

Arrange PAT testing for workplace equipment or use PAT testing in Ealing for local coverage. If the installation itself also needs assessment, discuss commercial EICR testing as a separate task. Follow appropriate urgent advice for immediate electrical danger rather than waiting for routine attendance.

- An agreed equipment inventory.
- Checks appropriate to equipment and risk.
- Identifiable findings and managed defects.
- Separate installation and appliance records.
