# What is emergency lighting testing? UK requirements explained
By Test Master UK6 November 20263 min read

Service illustration: fire safetyEmergency lighting testing checks how the lighting system responds when its normal supply fails. Emergency fittings help people see escape routes, exits and relevant hazards when normal illumination is lost. A fitting that appears intact can still have a weak battery or another fault, so routine maintenance needs more than a glance at its casing.

## What is being tested?
The checks consider operation on the emergency supply, the condition of relevant equipment and, during a duration test, whether operation continues for the required rated period. The exact procedure depends on the installed system and agreed scope. Testing should be supported by an inventory or layout so every relevant fitting can be identified.

Functional operation is not the same as a full design assessment. All fittings turning on does not by itself prove adequate illumination, correct positions or a suitable escape strategy. Where those matters are uncertain, obtain competent assessment rather than asking a brief user check to answer every question.

## The main types of checks
A short functional test simulates loss of the appropriate normal supply and checks that fittings operate. An annual full-duration test assesses performance for the system's rated period, commonly three hours where that is the design requirement. Confirm the actual duration and system instructions.

Visual and routine management checks can identify damaged, obscured or missing fittings and unexpected indicators. They complement testing rather than replace it. Automatic testing can assist with scheduled checks, but somebody still needs to review its records and respond to faults.

- Functional response to simulated supply failure.
- Operation for the specified rated duration.
- Visible condition and appropriate indications.
- Documented results and follow-up actions.

## Why does testing matter?
Applicable fire safety duties require appropriate precautions and maintenance for premises within their scope. Government guidance commonly describes monthly functional and annual full-duration testing. The legal framework and required provision vary by premises and jurisdiction; not every rental property has the same emergency lighting duties.

Testing identifies problems that need action, but it cannot guarantee there are no hidden defects or that equipment will never fail later. Maintain a reporting route between scheduled checks and review the system when the building layout or use changes.

## Who should manage the work?
Appoint someone to arrange checks, keep records and follow up findings. Suitably instructed people may carry out agreed routine user checks. More detailed testing, electrical work and system assessments need the appropriate competence and equipment.

Arrange emergency lighting testing with site information, existing records and access details. Related fire alarm testing and commercial EICR testing address different systems and should be scoped separately. Plan any duration test so occupants are not left depending on depleted batteries afterwards.
