# An unsatisfactory EICR testing report: what to do next
By Test Master UK4 October 20262 min read

Service illustration: eicr testingReceiving an unsatisfactory EICR testing report means the findings need action; it does not tell you that every part of the installation must be replaced. Read the observations, understand any immediate danger and ask the inspector to explain the required work or investigation. A calm, documented response is more useful than either ignoring the report or accepting an unclear repair proposal.

## Deal with urgent danger first
A C1 finding identifies danger present and requires immediate remedial action. Follow competent advice on making the situation safe. C2 observations require urgent remedial action. FI wording and its effect on the report's outcome changed in the 2026 amendment, so ask the inspector to explain the report's edition and each finding. Do not let collecting quotations delay a necessary safety response.

If there is smoke, exposed live equipment or an electrical injury risk, keep people away and obtain the appropriate urgent help. Never attempt live electrical work yourself or reconnect something that has been isolated for safety.

## Create an observation-by-observation plan
Keep each code with its description and location. Ask for clarification where you cannot identify the affected part of the installation. FI requires investigation to understand the problem; it should not be turned into a guessed remedy without the required assessment.

Agree what work is proposed, what it addresses and which technical documents will demonstrate completion. C3 recommendations can be considered as improvements, but they are not interchangeable with C1, C2 or FI observations.

## Follow the applicable deadlines
For private rented properties covered by England's regulations, required remedial work or further investigation must be completed within 28 days or the shorter period specified in the report. Written confirmation and the original report must be handled as the government guidance directs. That maximum period does not reduce the urgency of an immediate danger.

For a rental installation, contact the residential EICR testing service with the complete report. Businesses can discuss commercial EICR testing and report findings. Do not send only a screenshot of the conclusion if the full observations are available.

## Keep a complete evidence trail
Store the original report, agreed work scope, investigation findings and written completion evidence together. Record who reviewed the documents and any further action needed. A quote or invoice confirms a commercial transaction, not necessarily that the installation now meets the required safety standard.

- Prioritise immediate danger and urgent findings.
- Clarify each observation and its location.
- Track the report's deadlines and applicable duties.
- Obtain and retain technical completion evidence.
