# PAT testing for offices and hotels in London: managing equipment between visits
By Test Master UK6 November 20263 min read

Service illustration: pat testingOffices and hotels use electrical equipment in changing, occupied environments. Desk moves, room turnovers, cleaning rounds and replacement appliances can all affect the equipment inventory between inspection visits. PAT testing can support maintenance, but day-to-day reporting and action are equally important. This guide focuses on office and hotel operations rather than repeating a general pre-visit checklist.

## Office equipment changes need an owner
Computers, monitors, printers and extension leads can move between desks or arrive with temporary staff and contractors. Record additions and clarify who manages hired or personally owned equipment. A static inventory becomes less useful when it no longer matches the workplace.

Staff should be able to report damaged leads, cracked plugs, unusual heat or unsuitable extension arrangements. Do not leave a known defect until the next scheduled inspection. Desk reorganisations should consider cable protection and equipment placement as well as available space.

## Hotel rooms and shared equipment
Room kettles, lamps, televisions and suitable guest-use appliances should have identifiable locations or asset references. Cleaning equipment and items moved between rooms need their own tracking. Record replacements so an old result is not silently transferred to a new appliance.

Give housekeeping and front-desk staff a straightforward fault-reporting process. Routine observations should not involve opening plugs or dismantling equipment. When a defect is reported, prevent unsafe use and obtain competent advice rather than moving the item to another room.

## Plan access without promising zero disruption
Coordinate occupied rooms, guest privacy, meeting rooms and critical office equipment. Identify who can authorise access or interruption and how replacements or temporary arrangements will be managed. A safe inspection scope should not be sacrificed to a promise that no equipment will ever be disconnected.

Specialist catering, refrigeration or other equipment can need a different procedure or maintenance arrangement. Describe it before booking rather than assuming a general appliance visit includes every system in the premises.

## Use findings to improve the maintenance plan
Repeated cable damage or failed appliances may indicate handling, storage or suitability problems. Review the cause as well as inspection intervals. Hotels and offices should not be assigned an identical annual or two-year schedule simply because they share a building category.

Risk, actual use, condition, manufacturer information and applicable conditions should inform competent advice. Keep urgent action deadlines separate from routine visit dates. Records should identify both the original finding and the completed repair, replacement or removal.

## Keep insurance and wider safety scopes clear
Check the actual insurance policy and any lease or client requirements for inspection evidence. Do not assume that a PAT certificate automatically guarantees cover or that a missing sticker automatically invalidates a claim. Documented checks support maintenance but do not eliminate legal responsibilities.

Arrange PAT testing for London offices and hotels, with local options such as PAT testing in Ealing. Fixed-installation assessment belongs to commercial EICR testing. Hotel escape arrangements and other fire precautions may need a separate fire risk assessment.

- Track equipment moves and replacements.
- Brief staff on safe fault reporting.
- Agree occupied-room and critical-load access.
- Prevent unsafe reuse and retain completion evidence.
- Keep appliance, installation and fire safety scopes distinct.
