# How often should PAT testing be done? A risk-based guide
By Test Master UK26 October 20262 min read

Service illustration: pat testingThere is no single PAT testing interval that fits a shared-house kitchen, a quiet office and a busy construction site. The right maintenance plan considers how equipment is used, how easily it can be damaged and what previous inspections found. A schedule should explain the reason for the interval as well as the next date.

## Look at movement, handling and surroundings
Equipment that is repeatedly moved, unplugged or used in demanding conditions can face different risks from equipment that stays in one position. Think about cables under furniture, appliances near water, items shared by many people and tools transported between sites. A description such as 'office equipment' is too broad if it groups a static monitor with a frequently moved heater.

User checks remain important between formal inspections. Staff should report visible damage, unusual heat or intermittent faults rather than waiting for the next planned visit. Checks should not involve opening equipment or exposing live parts.

## Use previous results to refine the plan
A history of repeated cable damage or failed plugs is evidence that the current approach needs review. Consider changing storage, training or equipment choice as well as the inspection interval. More frequent testing alone will not solve a cable being crushed every day.

Where results remain satisfactory, a competent person may consider whether the interval is still proportionate. That is a documented judgement, not an automatic extension based only on a green label. Manufacturer instructions and contract requirements also need to be considered.

## Give each group a clear review point
Group similar items only where their risks are genuinely similar. Record the inspection or testing approach for each group, who agreed it and when it will be reviewed. New equipment, changes in use and repairs can all trigger a review before the scheduled date.

Discuss risk-based PAT testing when you request a quote. For premises in Ealing, PAT testing in Ealing provides a relevant local service route without treating a guide as a booking page.

## Questions to ask before setting a date
Ask the tester how the proposed interval relates to your actual equipment and whether visual inspections are needed between electrical tests. The aim is a workable system that people follow, not a calendar entry that leaves new or damaged items unmanaged.

- How often is the appliance handled or moved?
- Could the cable or plug be damaged in normal use?
- What did previous inspections find?
- Are there manufacturer or contract conditions?
- What changes would trigger an earlier review?
