# PAT testing equipment: testers, suitable methods and reliable records
By Test Master UK6 November 20263 min read

Service illustration: pat testingPAT testing equipment helps a competent person make appropriate electrical measurements on equipment within an agreed inspection scope. The instrument is only one part of the process: visual inspection, choosing suitable methods and interpreting findings remain important. This guide explains equipment selection and its limitations, rather than providing operating instructions or recommending an unverified product.

## What does a portable appliance tester measure?
Depending on the instrument and equipment being assessed, tests can consider protective conductor continuity, insulation resistance and leakage-related characteristics. Suitable checks on leads can assess connections and polarity. Not every appliance requires every test, and equipment classification affects which methods are appropriate.

An automatic pass display does not establish that the appliance has no visible damage or that the right test was selected. A competent tester considers construction, condition, manufacturer information and the intended procedure alongside any measurements. Test results should never replace inspection of relevant accessible features.

## Match the instrument and accessories to the task
Choose equipment capable of the required methods, with suitable leads and adaptors for the appliances concerned. Specialist equipment, sensitive electronics or unfamiliar connections may require a different approach or additional expertise. A higher price or faster test sequence does not automatically make an instrument suitable for every item.

Reporting features can help manage a large inventory through identifiers and stored results. They should support traceability rather than encourage rushed checks. Confirm how records distinguish an appliance, a detachable lead and any separately identified accessories.

## Maintain confidence in the equipment
Test instruments, leads and accessories need to remain suitable and in good condition. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and the organisation's arrangements for functional checks, maintenance and calibration or verification where appropriate. Damaged leads or unsuitable accessories should not remain in use.

Do not assume a universal calibration interval from a general article. The required arrangements depend on the instrument, use, instructions and applicable procedures. Record relevant checks so the person using the equipment can understand its status and limitations.

## What the equipment cannot tell you
A PAT tester does not replace a fixed-installation inspection, determine every aspect of product suitability or guarantee future safety. A simple socket tester is not a complete assessment of a socket circuit. Report installation concerns for appropriate competent attention instead of expanding an appliance test beyond its agreed scope.

Labels, barcodes and software help identify results but are not electrical tests themselves. Records should state the checks actually completed and any exclusions. A newly printed pass label cannot create evidence that equipment was inspected.

## Buying equipment or arranging an inspection
An organisation considering internal testing should assess competence, procedures, instrument support and record management as well as purchase cost. A short course or a machine with automatic settings does not demonstrate competence for every appliance. Staff need clear limits and a route for specialist assistance.

For an external visit, request PAT testing with an agreed equipment scope, including PAT testing in Greenford for local premises. Fixed-wiring questions belong to separately agreed commercial EICR testing.

- Suitable methods for the actual equipment.
- Compatible, maintained leads and accessories.
- Competence to select and interpret checks.
- Traceable results, limitations and defect actions.
