# PAT testing course: choosing training and understanding competence
By Test Master UK6 November 20262 min read

Service illustration: pat testingA PAT testing course can help staff learn inspection methods, suitable equipment use and recordkeeping. Choosing training requires more than comparing course length or a certificate title. This is a guide to assessing training needs and competence, not an announcement that Test Master provides courses or a recommendation for an unverified training provider.

## Match training to the actual work
Identify which tasks staff will perform: reporting visible damage, formal inspection, electrical testing or managing records. These have different competence requirements. A person trained for straightforward office appliances may not be ready to assess unfamiliar specialist equipment.

Ask the course provider about prerequisites, practical content, equipment types and assessment. The training should address safe methods, choosing suitable tests and recognising when an item or situation is beyond the learner's competence.

## Practical skills matter
Online learning can support theory, but reading or watching a procedure does not demonstrate practical competence. Find out how safe equipment handling, selecting tests and interpreting results will be taught and assessed.

Training should include limitations and stop points, not just operating an automatic test sequence. A tester needs to know when a method is unsuitable and when further competent assistance is required. Do not practise on unknown equipment using instructions from a general article.

## Understand certificates and qualifications
Check the exact qualification title, current availability and assessment requirements with the awarding organisation or training provider. An attendance certificate and an assessed qualification are not necessarily equivalent.

HSE explains that the person carrying out testing needs appropriate competence; it does not require every PAT tester to be an electrician or hold one particular named course certificate. Competence depends on knowledge, experience and the task, not a logo alone.

## Plan support after training
An employer should define what trained staff may do, provide suitable equipment and procedures, and arrange support for unfamiliar situations. Review competence when tasks or equipment change. A short course is not permission to undertake fixed-installation work.

Where an external inspection is preferred, arrange professional PAT testing with the equipment list and site arrangements. Fixed-installation questions belong to a separately agreed commercial EICR testing scope.

- Defined tasks and prerequisites.
- Appropriate practical learning and assessment.
- Clear qualification and certificate scope.
- Supervision, procedures and escalation arrangements.
