# PAT testing cost: comparing appliance counts, minimum charges and reporting
By Test Master UK6 November 20262 min read

Service illustration: pat testingPAT testing cost depends on the equipment and work included, not just a headline per-appliance price. A useful quote explains how items are counted, any minimum attendance charge and the records you will receive. This guide helps businesses and property managers compare like-for-like scopes without inventing Test Master prices or a national average.

## Clarify what counts as an item
Ask how the provider counts appliances, detachable leads, extension leads and accessories. Two quotes using different counting rules can produce different totals for the same workplace. Give a realistic inventory and explain whether stored or spare equipment is included.

Specialist devices or equipment requiring a different procedure should be identified early. A basic per-item rate may not cover every equipment type. Confirm exclusions rather than assuming that everything electrical belongs in one standard visit.

## Attendance and access can affect the total
Check minimum charges, travel assumptions and the cost of additional visits if items are unavailable. Restricted rooms, occupied desks and planned IT interruptions can change attendance time. Agree access arrangements before comparing prices.

A larger equipment count does not guarantee a lower rate with every provider. Ask for the actual total and its assumptions. Out-of-hours attendance and special access requirements should be agreed rather than discovered after the visit.

## Ask what documentation and follow-up include
Confirm whether item-level results, the agreed labels and a summary report are included. Find out how failed equipment will be identified and communicated. Repairs, replacements or post-repair checks may be separate services and charges.

The fee should not promise that every appliance will pass. Compare the scope, competence and clarity of findings as well as price. Paying for inspection does not guarantee future safety or remove the need to act on damage.

## Budget for a maintenance plan, not an automatic annual bill
Inspection and testing frequency should follow risk, competent advice and applicable conditions. Do not multiply a quote by an assumed annual schedule for every item. Keep routine checks and action on known defects separate from the next planned attendance.

Request a property-specific PAT testing quote with item counts and site details. For PAT testing in Ealing, share the previous register and access requirements. If fixed wiring also needs assessment, price commercial EICR testing as a separate scope.

- Agreed item-counting method.
- Minimum attendance and additional charges.
- Access and interruption assumptions.
- Included reports and separate follow-up costs.
