# PAT testing checklist: managing inspection, exclusions and failed equipment
By Test Master UK6 November 20262 min read

Service illustration: pat testingA PAT testing checklist is most useful when it connects real appliances to results and follow-up actions. It cannot guarantee every defect will be found or replace competence in choosing suitable tests. This guide focuses on managing the inspection workflow and reconciling its outputs; the existing office preparation guide covers access and interruption planning before attendance.

## Reconcile equipment with the agreed inventory
Identify the appliance, owner, location and stable asset reference. Include leads and relevant accessories where they belong in the agreed scope. Mark missing equipment and new items so neither quietly disappears from the register.

Record excluded, inaccessible or unsuitable items separately with a reason. An item not tested should not receive a result implying that it was checked. Fixed equipment or specialist devices may need a different maintenance arrangement.

## Visual inspection and suitable testing
Inspection can identify damaged flexes, plugs, casings and signs of overheating. The competent tester determines the appropriate procedure, equipment classification and any electrical tests. Not every appliance requires the same tests or settings.

This is not a DIY electrical procedure. Users can report visible concerns in normal use without dismantling equipment. Do not open plugs, expose wiring or apply tests from a generic list unless you have the appropriate competence for that task.

## Make results traceable
The records should identify the actual item and the checks completed, findings, date and tester. Where measurements are provided, keep them with the item record. A label is a useful reference to those results, not an ongoing safety guarantee.

Check the register against the agreed inventory. Resolve unexplained gaps and clarify ambiguous descriptions before filing the report. The number of labels attached is not necessarily the number of appliances within a complete agreed scope.

## Close failed-item actions
Prevent unsafe equipment returning to use following competent advice. Record repair, replacement or removal and any necessary checks before reuse. Repeated damage should prompt review of handling, storage or equipment suitability as well as inspection frequency.

Arrange PAT testing with an agreed equipment scope, including PAT testing in Greenford for local premises. Fixed-wiring concerns need a separate commercial EICR testing scope.

- Reconcile inventory and exclusions.
- Record the checks actually completed.
- Link results to stable appliance identifiers.
- Prevent reuse and document failed-item outcomes.
