# Is PAT testing a legal requirement for your business?
By Test Master UK28 October 20263 min read

Service illustration: pat testingUK electrical safety duties require relevant equipment to be maintained safely. They do not create a blanket rule that every appliance must undergo PAT testing once a year. Understanding that distinction helps a business spend its maintenance budget on the right checks while retaining evidence of what has actually been done.

## The duty is safe equipment
HSE describes PAT testing as one part of an effective maintenance system. Depending on the risk, that system can include user checks, formal visual inspection and electrical testing. Some defects, including damaged flexes or cracked plugs, are visible without a tester. Other problems need appropriate testing by someone competent.

The absence of a universal PAT testing rule is not permission to ignore equipment. Employers should consider how an appliance could cause harm, how often it is moved and whether employees can recognise and report damage. Maintenance decisions need to fit the workplace rather than follow an unsupported assumption.

## Separate legislation from contract conditions
An insurer, landlord, managing agent or client may require particular testing records. Those requirements can be stricter or more specific than a general legal minimum. Read the actual policy or contract and ask for clarification where the wording is vague. Do not assume that a request for a certificate sets the correct interval for every appliance.

If different documents impose different dates, keep the reason for each date in your register. This makes it easier to explain why an item was inspected when it was and whether the next check comes from risk assessment, a contract or previous defects.

## Build a proportionate inspection system
Assign someone to maintain the equipment inventory and a clear route for reporting faults. Decide which checks staff can safely make without dismantling anything, and when a competent tester should inspect or test. Review intervals using real findings rather than repeating the same schedule indefinitely.

Our business PAT testing service can be scoped around your equipment and access arrangements. If you need a local appointment, the PAT testing Greenford page explains the service available in that area.

## What evidence is useful?
A readable register should identify the item, location, inspection date, outcome and follow-up action. A pass label alone does not show how defects were managed or whether the equipment is still in the same condition. Keep maintenance evidence available to the people responsible for acting on it.

- Identify equipment and the risks of its use.
- Check relevant contract and insurer requirements.
- Agree a visual inspection and testing plan.
- Keep records of defects, repairs and review decisions.
