# Turning a fire risk assessment into a practical action plan
By Test Master UK11 September 20262 min read

Service illustration: fire safetyA fire risk assessment is most useful when its findings lead to a maintained action plan. Filing the report does not repair a defective closer, clear an escape route or resolve an alarm fault. The responsible people need to understand priorities, allocate work and retain evidence that each action has genuinely been completed.

## Read the finding and its context
Keep the assessor's description, location and recommended action together. Ask for clarification where the wording is uncertain. A recommendation may concern physical work, a management procedure or further investigation; those need different responses.

Prioritise using the assessment and competent advice rather than ranking solely by cost. An urgent issue should not sit behind easier cosmetic jobs. Where immediate precautions are necessary, agree them promptly and document who will maintain them until the underlying issue is resolved.

## Assign responsibility across shared premises
Landlords, employers, agents and contractors can each control different parts of a building. Clarify who can arrange access, approve work and maintain shared systems. Where duties overlap, coordinate the response so an action does not remain open because each party assumes another has taken it.

Give each task a named owner, target date and required evidence. Include dependencies, such as a competent investigation before specifying a repair. A date chosen for convenience should not override the urgency in the assessment.

## Use the right service for the action
An alarm fault needs an appropriate system response; a door defect needs suitable assessment and repair. A general compliance label should not hide the actual technical scope. Keep quotations linked to the finding so you can see what the proposed work addresses.

Discuss remedial works for fire compliance for relevant actions, fire door inspection for door concerns and fire alarm testing for system maintenance. If the building has changed, a fire risk assessment review may also be needed.

## Close and review the action properly
Keep completion photographs, competent service records or other suitable evidence with the source finding. Confirm that the intended result was achieved rather than treating payment as automatic closure. Review the wider plan when work changes systems, routes or the premises' use, and brief occupants where procedures change.

- Preserve the finding, location and priority.
- Name the person responsible and agree required evidence.
- Match work scope to the actual recommendation.
- Confirm completion and review any wider changes.
