# Fire extinguisher servicing: checks, maintenance and replacement planning
By Test Master UK16 September 20262 min read

Service illustration: fire safetyFire extinguishers need to be suitable for the premises and maintained in working condition. Buying an extinguisher and placing it by a door is not a complete fire safety plan. Selection, location, staff information and maintenance should follow the risk assessment and the intended response to a fire.

## Check what the premises actually needs
Different fire risks call for different equipment decisions. The assessment should consider the hazards, occupants and whether people are expected and trained to use firefighting equipment. Do not assume that a domestic shared house should be equipped in exactly the same way as a shop or office.

An extinguisher must not encourage someone to delay escape or attempt to tackle a fire beyond their training. Life safety and the premises' emergency plan take priority over protecting property. The equipment's presence does not replace prevention measures.

## Separate routine checks from servicing
Routine management checks can identify missing, damaged, obstructed or apparently discharged equipment. Look at the condition and location in accordance with the equipment instructions and agreed regime, and report concerns rather than attempting repairs.

Government fire safety guides describe regular checks and annual competent maintenance of portable extinguishers, with other maintenance or replacement requirements depending on type and condition. Ask the service provider about the specific equipment; not every unit has the same extended-service timetable.

## Keep an equipment-level record
List each extinguisher by identifier, type and location. Record service outcomes, defects and any replacement recommendation. If a unit is removed for work, agree how the required provision will be maintained rather than leaving an unexplained empty bracket.

Arrange fire extinguisher servicing with an approximate unit count and site details. Where the question is which units are needed, start with a fire risk assessment instead of ordering a generic bundle.

## Use findings to plan replacements
Corrosion, damage, missing instructions or unsuitable equipment can require action before a routine future date. Keep the competent service advice and document what was replaced. Recheck placement after office changes or refurbishment so equipment remains accessible and consistent with the current plan.

- Confirm selection against the premises' assessment.
- Keep equipment accessible and report visible damage.
- Arrange competent servicing for the installed types.
- Record defects, replacements and provision during removal.
