# Emergency lighting wiring diagrams: understanding the system safely
By Test Master UK6 November 20263 min read

Service illustration: fire safetyAn emergency lighting wiring diagram shows how the components of a particular system are connected. It helps competent electricians plan, inspect and maintain the installation. For building managers, knowing what the drawing represents can improve handovers and maintenance discussions. This guide explains the concepts; it is not a wiring diagram or instructions for carrying out electrical installation work.

## What information does a wiring diagram contain?
Drawings can identify normal and emergency supplies, fittings, protective devices, test controls, batteries and circuit references. Their level of detail varies. Keep manufacturer diagrams distinguishable from the site-specific as-installed drawing, and check that any revision reflects alterations made to the actual building.

A missing or outdated drawing can make fault finding more difficult. Tell the electrician where records are incomplete instead of assuming a similar online diagram represents the installation. Cable routes and circuit identifiers need verification by someone competent before they are relied upon for work.

## Permanent supplies, controls and batteries
Many self-contained fittings use a permanent normal supply to charge the battery and detect loss of that supply. Some have a separate switched supply or control input for normal operation. The terminals and required connections depend on the product; maintained operation does not mean every fitting needs the same number of supply conductors.

Central battery systems serve multiple fittings from a shared source and have their own design and circuit requirements. Protective conductors, cable selection, protection and safe isolation must be considered where applicable. A simplified list of live, neutral and switched live must never be treated as a complete cable specification.

## Maintained and non-maintained operation
Maintained emergency lighting provides illumination during normal operation as well as following loss of the normal supply. Depending on the design, normal operation may be controlled. Non-maintained emergency lighting operates in emergency mode when its normal supply fails. Some products support different configurations, so consult the exact manufacturer's instructions.

The building's required protection should respond appropriately to loss of normal lighting in the relevant area, not only a whole-building outage. The designer must decide suitable supply and control arrangements. Building managers should not modify a fitting's wiring to change its mode.

## Test switches and safe maintenance
A dedicated test control can simulate loss of the relevant normal supply. It is not a general instruction to isolate the entire building, nor does operating it establish safe isolation for electrical work. Never open switches, remove covers or work on terminals as part of a routine user check.

Use emergency lighting testing to discuss system checks and missing records. Installation condition questions may require a separately agreed commercial EICR testing scope. Keep wiring changes, competent verification and updated drawings with the system records.

- Keep product instructions and current site drawings.
- Identify the installed system and control arrangement.
- Use competent electricians for wiring and alterations.
- Record changes and retain verification evidence.
