# Emergency lighting testing: functional checks, duration tests and records
By Test Master UK25 September 20262 min read

Service illustration: fire safetyEmergency lighting helps people find their way when normal lighting fails. A fitting that looks intact during the day may not operate correctly on its emergency supply, so maintenance needs more than a visual glance. The property's fire safety assessment and system instructions should inform the testing and recording arrangements.

## Understand the different checks
Routine functional checks establish whether fittings operate when the normal supply is simulated as failing. A full-duration test checks operation for the system's required rated period. These are different checks and should not be recorded as interchangeable.

UK fire safety guidance commonly describes monthly functional checks and an annual full-duration test. Confirm the appropriate regime, system type and manufacturer's instructions for your premises rather than treating a short check as proof that the batteries can support the full rated duration.

## Plan a safe test window
Duration testing can leave batteries needing time to recharge. Plan the visit so the building's occupants are not left relying on depleted emergency lighting. The responsible person and competent tester should agree how the system will be restored and how any failed fittings will be managed.

Identify restricted areas and fittings that are hard to access. Automatic testing systems can assist, but somebody still needs to review results and act on faults. A device recording an error is not the same as the defect being resolved.

## Use a fitting-level record
Identify fittings by location or a stable reference and record the date, type of test, outcome and defect action. Note whether a problem affects an escape route, stairs or another important area so it can be prioritised appropriately. Keep the system layout or inventory with the logbook where available.

Arrange emergency lighting testing with access and occupancy information. For the wider building plan, fire safety compliance in Ealing provides a local route to related services.

## Follow faults through to completion
Agree who will arrange repair, replacement and the necessary post-work checks. Repeated failures may indicate a broader maintenance issue. Retain the completion evidence and confirm the lighting has returned to its normal ready state rather than simply closing the appointment in a calendar.

- Distinguish functional checks from duration tests.
- Agree a safe test and recharge window.
- Record outcomes against fitting locations.
- Assign defect actions and retain completion evidence.
