# Emergency lighting test certificate: a guide to reports and compliance records
By Test Master UK6 November 20263 min read

Service illustration: fire safetyAn emergency lighting test certificate or report records what was inspected and tested, the results and any limitations or defects. It is an important part of a building's safety records, but the existence of a certificate does not automatically prove that the entire building is safe or compliant. Understanding its scope helps a London building manager turn paperwork into useful maintenance evidence.

## What does the document show?
The report should identify the premises and system, the date, who carried out the work and which checks were completed. It should distinguish a brief functional check from a full-duration test. If a fitting failed, that finding should remain visible rather than being hidden behind a general certificate heading.

Inspection, design, installation and commissioning documents serve different purposes. A routine testing report is not necessarily an installation certificate or a verification of the original design. Ask the provider to explain exactly what the document covers and retain the relevant records together.

## What should an emergency lighting report include?
Useful results can be matched to actual fittings through stable identifiers or clear locations. The record should state the test duration, outcomes, observed faults, limitations and recommended corrective action. A signed summary without that supporting detail may leave the person arranging repairs unable to identify the problem.

Where repairs are completed, keep their date and outcome with the original finding. A report can include unresolved failures; receiving it does not mean those failures were fixed. Confirm whether post-repair checks have been completed and whether further work remains outstanding.

- Premises, system and fitting identifiers.
- Test date, type and duration.
- Results, defects and access limitations.
- Tester details and recommended actions.
- Repair and retest evidence where applicable.

## When should records be updated?
Record routine checks and periodic tests as they occur. New installations, alterations and significant repairs can require additional technical documents and verification. Ask a competent person which evidence is appropriate for the work, rather than assuming the same annual form covers every situation.

Keep the system logbook, layout, maintenance history and reports accessible to those responsible for managing the building. Use reminders based on the agreed regime and retain unresolved actions between appointments. Do not overwrite a failed result simply because a later visit was booked.

## Is one certificate a legal guarantee?
No. Applicable fire safety duties require suitable precautions and maintenance, with appropriate records. They should not be reduced to a universal claim that one specifically named certificate proves UK-wide compliance. Requirements depend on the premises, jurisdiction, system and applicable conditions.

Arrange emergency lighting testing and reporting with the existing records and an agreed scope. Where you need to review the wider precautions, a fire risk assessment addresses a different purpose from the test report. Read the findings promptly and give each necessary action an owner.
