# Emergency lighting installation: design, commissioning and handover
By Test Master UK6 November 20263 min read

Service illustration: fire safetyEmergency lighting installation starts with the building's needs, not with buying fittings. The system should support safe movement and escape when normal lighting fails. Building layout, occupancy and the fire safety strategy all affect the design. This guide explains the stages a landlord or building manager should discuss with competent designers and installers, rather than providing DIY electrical instructions.

## Assess the building before choosing equipment
Identify escape routes, exits, stairs, changes of level and relevant hazards. Consider shared areas, occupants who may need assistance and any planned changes in use. The design needs to reflect the applicable risk assessment and requirements, not simply copy a neighbouring building's fitting layout.

Where emergency illumination is necessary for safe escape, applicable fire safety duties require appropriate provision. That is not a blanket statement that every room or every rental home needs the same installation. Confirm the requirements for the actual premises and jurisdiction with competent advice.

## Choose the appropriate system
Maintained fittings can illuminate during normal and emergency operation; non-maintained fittings illuminate in emergency mode. Sustained or combined fittings use separate light sources for normal and emergency functions. Self-contained and central battery arrangements describe the power supply architecture, which is a separate design decision.

Design considerations include illumination, operating duration, positions, suitability for the environment and maintenance access. Applicable standards provide technical guidance, but a list of product types is not a design calculation. Do not assume a fitting is suitable solely because it is sold as an emergency light.

## Installation and commissioning
Competent electricians should carry out installation using the approved design, product instructions and relevant electrical requirements. Supply arrangements, protective devices and safe isolation need proper assessment. Wiring must not be improvised from a generic web article.

Commissioning should check that the installed arrangement operates as intended and that suitable verification has been completed. Simply seeing every light illuminate is not enough to establish adequate coverage or the required operating duration. Agree the documents, checks and any limitations before accepting the handover.

- A premises-specific design and agreed scope.
- Suitable fittings and accessible maintenance arrangements.
- Competent installation and verification.
- Current drawings, instructions and commissioning records.
- A routine testing and defect-management plan.

## Plan the ongoing maintenance
After handover, appoint someone to manage the records and arrange checks. Government guidance commonly describes monthly functional tests and annual full-duration testing. Follow the applicable system procedure and plan duration tests with sufficient recharge time so occupants are not left relying on depleted batteries.

For an existing or newly installed London system, discuss emergency lighting testing and confirm the inspection scope. A fire risk assessment can help review wider building precautions; it does not replace competent lighting design or installation verification.
