# EICR testing and PAT testing: what is the difference?
By Test Master UK17 October 20262 min read

Service illustration: eicr testingEICR testing and PAT testing answer different safety questions. EICR testing concerns the condition of the fixed electrical installation. PAT testing concerns electrical equipment and its maintenance. Booking one does not automatically cover the other, even where the same property contains sockets, wiring and many plug-in appliances.

## What EICR testing examines
An electrical installation condition report records the findings from inspection and testing of the fixed installation within the agreed scope. Distribution boards, circuits, wiring and accessories such as sockets form part of that assessment. The report identifies observations, limitations and the overall outcome.

It is important to read the scope and limitations as well as the satisfactory or unsatisfactory conclusion. An area that could not be accessed or a circuit excluded by agreement has not become safe simply because a report exists. Ask the inspector to explain any gaps and required follow-up.

## What PAT testing examines
Portable appliance inspection and testing considers equipment such as kettles, leads and suitable plug-in devices. Visual inspection and class-appropriate electrical testing can form part of a risk-based maintenance plan. The appliance inventory and outcomes should identify which items were checked and what happened to defective ones.

Equipment connected permanently to the installation needs an agreed approach. Do not classify every built-in appliance as covered by either visit without asking. Responsibility and scope are more reliable than the everyday meaning of the word 'portable'.

## Why properties may need both
A satisfactory EICR testing report does not cover subsequent damage to a tenant's extension lead. Likewise, a tested kettle does not establish that the socket circuit is safe. Landlords and facilities managers should maintain separate records and review arrangements for the installation and equipment.

Choose residential EICR testing or commercial EICR testing for the installation, and PAT testing for an agreed equipment inventory.

## How to brief a provider
Describe the property use, size, occupancy and known electrical issues. Share the previous installation report and appliance register where available. Ask what can be inspected in one visit, what interruptions are needed and which outputs you will receive. A combined attendance can be convenient, but it should not blur the two scopes.

- Identify installation work separately from appliance checks.
- Provide previous reports and equipment records.
- Agree access and power interruption arrangements.
- Track installation and appliance actions separately.
