# EICR testing explained: what electrical measurements tell the inspector
By Test Master UK6 November 20262 min read

Service illustration: eicr testingEICR testing combines inspection with appropriate electrical measurements. The readings help a competent inspector assess protective measures and installation condition; they do not provide a simple safety score for a property manager to interpret alone. This guide explains the purpose of common checks, rather than repeating the stages of an inspection visit or providing an electrical testing procedure.

## Continuity and protective conductors
Continuity checks can help establish that relevant conductors are connected as intended. Protective conductors and bonding form part of the installation's protection against electric shock. The inspector considers the arrangement, circuit details and results together.

A continuity reading does not prove every other protective measure works. It must be interpreted in context and with the inspection findings. Property managers should not open accessories or attempt to reproduce measurements using a household meter.

## Insulation resistance
Insulation resistance testing can identify concerns with insulation between relevant conductors. The method must take account of connected equipment and the circuit arrangement. A low reading is a reason for competent interpretation, not proof of one specific damaged cable.

Moisture, connected devices and other circumstances may affect results or the appropriate method. The inspector decides how to test safely and records relevant limitations. Generic online thresholds should not be used to approve an installation without that assessment.

## Fault protection, polarity and RCDs
Fault-loop information helps assess whether the protective arrangement can achieve the necessary disconnection under fault conditions. Polarity checks concern correct conductor connections. RCD checks assess relevant device operation using appropriate methods. Each answers a different question.

Operating an RCD's user test button is not a substitute for a complete EICR. Nor does a device tripping establish the adequacy of all wiring, bonding or circuit protection. Follow the device instructions for user checks and leave professional measurements to a competent person.

## Readings support a report, not a guarantee
The report should retain relevant schedules, observations and limitations alongside its overall assessment. Ask the inspector to explain unusual results and necessary follow-up. Seeing one acceptable reading cannot rule out all hidden defects or future deterioration.

Discuss commercial EICR testing or residential EICR testing with your installation information. PAT testing addresses a separately agreed equipment scope rather than replacing fixed-installation tests.

- Keep test schedules with the report.
- Ask about context and limitations.
- Do not interpret isolated readings as a complete result.
- Use competent people for electrical testing.
