# EICR register: is there a national database and how do you verify a report?
By Test Master UK6 November 20262 min read

Service illustration: eicr testingSearching for an EICR register often means trying to find a missing report or check whether a document is genuine. There is no universal government-run public database containing every EICR issued in the UK. Keeping your own complete copy and knowing who issued it are therefore important. Contractor membership checks and property inspection records are different things.

## Does an EICR have to be registered centrally?
An EICR does not generally need entry in a national central register simply because it has been issued. Reporting software and contractors may maintain their own records, but these are not a universal public search system. Do not assume that a lost report can be recovered from a government database.

Electrical installation work may have separate building-control notification or certification requirements. That is a different process from issuing a condition report on an existing installation. A notification record should not be mistaken for an EICR covering the property's current condition.

## Check the issuer and the document
Contact the electrician or company that issued the report through independently confirmed details. Ask them to confirm its reference, inspection date, premises and completeness. Have the full report available rather than relying on a cropped summary.

If scheme membership is claimed, verify the contractor's listing and relevant scope through that scheme's official service. A membership listing does not authenticate a particular report or guarantee competence for every task. Qualified and competent inspection remains the requirement; do not invent a separate compulsory 'EICR registered electrician' licence.

## Recover missing records sensibly
Ask the previous owner, landlord, managing agent or original contractor for a complete copy where appropriate. Retrieval depends on the records they actually retain; this guide does not promise that a provider stores every report indefinitely.

If the report cannot be obtained, do not recreate findings or treat an invoice as equivalent evidence. Obtain competent advice about a suitable new inspection and what is needed for the property's legal or contractual duties.

## Maintain a useful property register
Your own register can record the property, report reference, inspection date, next due date and unresolved actions. Store the original document and completion evidence securely, with appropriate access and backups. For covered rentals, retain evidence that required copies were supplied to tenants and authorities.

Arrange residential EICR testing or commercial EICR testing if you need a new assessment. Use EICR testing in Ealing for local coverage information, and share whatever genuine previous records remain.

- Keep the complete original report.
- Verify issuer details independently.
- Distinguish membership checks from report authentication.
- Track dates, actions and required document delivery.
