# Commercial EICR testing: planning access and electrical downtime
By Test Master UK13 October 20262 min read

Service illustration: eicr testingCommercial EICR testing needs a realistic plan for access and interruptions. Offices, shops and other occupied premises can have circuits supporting critical services alongside ordinary sockets and lighting. Sharing that information early helps the inspector agree a safe scope without making unrealistic promises that testing will never affect business operations.

## Describe the installation, not just the floor area
Provide the previous report and available distribution-board or circuit information. Explain building use, opening hours, shared supplies and areas controlled by another tenant or landlord. Identify known faults and alterations since the previous inspection.

A quote should make the agreed scope understandable: which premises and boards are included, what access is needed and how exclusions will be handled. Avoid comparing quotes solely on price if one includes a different installation or assumes access that cannot be provided.

## Map the consequences of switching off
Consult the people responsible for IT, security systems, refrigeration and other important equipment. Establish how systems can be shut down and restarted safely, and who can authorise interruptions. Where a shutdown affects another occupier, coordinate with them rather than assuming the meter or board serves only your space.

Out-of-hours attendance may help, but it does not remove the need for a method and restart plan. Tell the provider about restricted areas, permits and site induction requirements before fixing the attendance window.

## Understand the report's limits
Inspection cannot make an inaccessible part of the installation disappear. Review recorded limitations and ask what they mean for confidence in the result. A next inspection date should be interpreted with the report and the premises' risk, not copied automatically from a residential rental rule.

Discuss the scope with the commercial EICR testing service. For a London borough site, EICR testing in Ealing provides local coverage information. Appliance testing remains a separate PAT testing service.

## Assign an owner for observations
Someone should review the report promptly and arrange action on safety findings. Keep remedial evidence alongside the original report and record any changes to the installation. An inspection file that nobody reads is not an effective maintenance plan.

- Share the last report and known circuit information.
- Identify critical loads and affected occupiers.
- Agree shutdown, restart and access permissions.
- Read limitations and assign follow-up actions.
